Geography

Geography at our schools is all about helping children make sense of the world—its people, places, and environments. Our curriculum is firmly rooted in the National Curriculum, ensuring clear progression in locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, and geographical skills. To enrich this, we draw on and adapt high‑quality materials from Oak National Academy, blending them with our own local context and hands‑on learning experiences.

Our approach encourages children to think like geographers. Each unit is built around purposeful enquiry, prompting pupils to ask questions such as “Why do people live near volcanoes?” or “How does our local area compare to a contrasting region?” Through maps, fieldwork, digital tools, and real‑world examples, children learn to investigate, analyse, and explain the world around them.

What Children Gain from Our Geography Curriculum

  • Strong locational knowledge, including continents, oceans, countries, and key physical features

  • Understanding of human and physical processes, such as weather patterns, settlements, and natural landscapes

  • Fieldwork skills, developed through observing, measuring, and recording in the local environment

  • Map and data skills, using atlases, digital mapping, and geographical information to interpret the world

  • Curiosity about global issues, including sustainability, climate, and how people interact with their environment

  • A sense of place, helping them understand their local area and how it connects to the wider world

By combining the structure of the National Curriculum with the flexibility of adapted Oak Academy resources, we create a geography curriculum that is engaging, relevant, and ambitious. Children leave each unit with a deeper understanding of the world and the confidence to explore it with curiosity and care.
